STORYLINE:
Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has increased the selling prices of both local and imported wheat for producing subsidized bread by approximately 20 percent, now set at EGP 13,750 (about 281.74 U.S. dollars) per ton effective this August, as detailed in a government document published by Asharq Bloomberg on Sunday.
The government document explained that mills also raised the price of flour supplied to local bread bakeries to EGP 16,000 (about 327.84 U.S. dollars) per ton starting in early August, compared to the previous price of EGP 11,800 (about 241.78 U.S. dollars) per ton, an increase of 35%.
Egypt is the world's largest importer of wheat, and provides subsidized bread to more than 70 million residents as part of a massive food support program.
According to media reports, there will be no change in the prices of subsidized bread, as the increase will be borne by the state budget.
