STORYLINE:
China's Xinjiang started its first large unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) precipitation enhancement trial on Sunday in Hami City.
The 45-day trial aims to test the capabilities of large UAVs for precipitation enhancement in high-altitude areas.
The UAV used in the trial is equipped with three engines, various detection devices, and an anti-icing and de-icing system. It can carry 24 silver iodide flame strips and 200 flame bombs.
The UAV can travel up to 6,500 kilometers or operate for 30 hours with a full load, and it can fly at an altitude of up to 10,000 meters.
Hami City is characterized by a vast arid landscape and low precipitation. The UAV precipitation enhancement trial is expected to address local water shortages.
