Two tourists had to be rescued after venturing into a deep gorge when they were warned not to and were trapped by rising water levels.

The couple decided to admire the scenery in the Karadakh Gorge, in Russia's Republic of Dagestan, on July 28.

Despite its beautiful landscape, due to its narrow pathways and stone walls up to 550 feet high rising on both sides, it can quickly turn into a death trap during a storm.

The duo had reportedly been warned about increasingly worsening weather on the day of their hike.

Guides had even told them about a forecast of heavy rain with powerful winds, but the travellers decided to enter the gorge anyway.

As soon as the man and woman went deeper into the gorge, the rains began.

A heavy downpour ensued, and the water level rose. As a result, the tourists were trapped deep in the gorge.

Unable to escape on their own, the travellers were rescued by two employees of the Republican Ministry of Natural Resources.

A video filmed by one of the rescuers shows the other guiding the young people through strong water currents created by the rain reaching up to their knees.

The man reportedly broke his arm while assisting the duo out of the gorge.

Eventually, they were able to get out safely without further incidents.

The tourists thanked their rescuers and admitted that they were terrified when they realised they were stuck.

In another video, the young woman said: 'Thank you so much. We thought we would die there.'

The Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Dagestan said in a statement: 'Due to cloudy weather and impending rain, the tourists were warned about the danger of visiting the natural site.

'However, at their own risk, they decided to venture deeper into the gorge, where they became trapped as a result of a sudden rise in water levels.

'Seeing that the tourists had not returned for a long time, inspectors Kadilov Abdulkadir andAbakarov Ali hurried to help them. Everything ended well.

'The emotions of those rescued can be seen in the video.'
