Dhaka, Bangladesh - August 04, 2024

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule came to an end on Monday, as she fled weeks of deadly protests and the military announced it would form an interim government.

Hasina had been trying since early July to quell nationwide protests against her rule, but fled after a brutal day of unrest on Sunday that killed nearly 100 people. In a national broadcast on state television, Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman said Monday that Hasina had resigned and that the military would form an interim government.

“The country has suffered a lot, the economy has suffered, many people have died … it is time to end the violence,” Waker said. “I hope that after my speech the situation will improve.”
