British-Bangladeshis strike effigy in celebration of PM Sheikh Hasina's resignation in East London
The Bangladeshi diaspora celebrate the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today in East London's Altab Ali park, where hundreds gathered to sing and chant slogans, while dozens queued to energetically hit an effigy of the under-fire leader with shoes and sticks (August 5).
An enormous national flag was unfurled at the park as others carried a smaller one accompanied by a human chain.
The Awami Party leader announced her resignation earlier in the day and fled the country in a helicopter, with rumours circulating that she could be travelling to India and possibly on to the UK.
Mass protests rocked the country over job quotas for supporters, which squeezed out other applicants with no government connections.
