Iran strongly condemns Israel's assassination of Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh as a violation of international law and vows to take retaliatory measures against the aggressor, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Monday.

Kanaani stated that the Iranian government strongly condemned the killing of Haniyeh as a fragrant violation of international law. The world must vehemently denounce this senseless crime, Iran's official news agency Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Monday.

Iran has the right to defend its national security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and no one can challenge Iran's legitimate right to punish and deter the aggressor, the spokesman said, adding that Iran will take "decisive and firm" action to punish the aggressor to safeguard Iran's national security and dignity.

Moreover, Kanaani urged the United States to halt its support for Israel and emphasized that the international community should support "punishing the aggressor."

Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed early on Wednesday when their residence in the Iranian capital of Tehran was struck, as reported in a statement published on Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)'s official news outlet Sepah News.
