A fatal accident occurred this morning in Hillsborough County when a semi-truck veered off Interstate 75 and crashed into the Tampa Bypass Canal, resulting in the death of the driver.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded as the large truck lost control on the wet roadway amidst challenging conditions caused by Hurricane Debby's high winds. The vehicle breached a barrier and plunged into the canal, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

A dive team swiftly mobilized to the scene, recovering the body of the victim, identified as a 64-year-old man from Mississippi. Efforts are currently underway to extract the submerged truck from the water.

As Hurricane Debby continues to affect road conditions across the state, authorities urge drivers to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel to ensure safety on the roads.
