Milwaukee, United States - August 05, 2024

The Milwaukee County Zoo welcomed a precious new addition on July 7th as Nyota, an Eastern bongo, gave birth to a healthy calf named Nyeri. This joyous event marks a significant milestone for the zoo's conservation efforts.

At birth, Nyeri weighed 13 kilograms and demonstrated remarkable agility by walking just 25 minutes after being born. Shortly thereafter, she nursed from her mother, Nyota, who will continue to care for her for the next six to eight months.

Eastern bongos are classified as Critically Endangered, with fewer than 100 individuals estimated to remain in their native habitat of central Kenya. The birth of Nyeri is a crucial contribution to global conservation efforts aimed at preserving this rare species.
