Small Chinese fishing village thrives on tourism
(Voice_over)
Located in east China, Shuanghe Village is known as the “Sea Garden Village”.
In the past, this isolated land relied primarily on fishing. But the large consumption of natural resources has prompted the search for sustainable development path, and then the growth of tourism.
That’s when Zhang Ying returned to her hometown to start a business.

Zhang Ying, Homestay owner:
"In my courtyard, I plant the flowers and plants myself. It's this vibe that makes me comfortable, because everything is decorated, according to my own tastes and preferences."

Such an ecological environment is one of the attractions for tourists, the other being the stone houses.
Residents of Shuanghe Village, once quarry workers, built their homes with stone. These sturdy houses maintain comfortable temperatures year-round.

Zhang Ying, Homestay owner:
"In the past, living in a tiled house made from stacked stones meant poor living conditions. Now, it's the opposite – owning an old stone house is a sign of wealth and status."

The abundance of fishery resources also contributes to boosting tourism.

Zhang Ying, Homestay owner:
"Our fish here can be enjoyed for seven days without repeating. Seafood is our specialty, especially the seafood from Zhoushan – which is considered among the best nationwide."

Natural resources and cultural heritage have been given a pride of place in the countryside.
Shuanghe Village is home to six such homestays, with an average monthly income of up to 250,000 yuan, or 34,000 U.S. dollars, during peak tourist season in total.
Cultural tourism also boosts other businesses, such as cafes, fishing, leisure activities, and so on.
These changes enable residents to start businesses, find employment, and increase income right at their doorstep.
They showcase the impact of combining local industry strengths to boost rural economic development.
