Iran: Iran calls assassination of Hamas chief "unjustified, illegal violation" of its sovereignty
Tehran, Iran - August 05, 2024
Iran's acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri Kani said on Monday that Israel's assassination of Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh was an "unjustified and illegal violation and aggression" against Iran's sovereignty, and Iran has the right to respond to such acts.
At a meeting with foreign ambassadors and diplomats in Tehran, Bagheri Kani said that Israel's action had undermined regional and international stability and security, and Iran's response will be clear and resolute, according to Iranian media reports.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with the Secretary of Russia's Security Council Sergei Shoigu in Tehran on Monday.
During the meeting, the Iranian president noted Israel's "horrifying crimes" in Gaza and its actions aimed at "warmongering" in the region, saying Israel's "criminal actions against the oppressed and defenseless people of Gaza and its assassination of ... Haniyeh in Iran are flagrant instances of violating all international rules and regulations."
Shoigu, for his part, voiced Russia's willingness for all-out cooperation with Iran on regional issues.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview published by Russia's state news agency RIA on Tuesday that Israel's assassination of Haniyeh is aimed at prolonging and escalating the war. Israel must immediately stop its aggression against Palestine, he said.
