The turtle was chosen as the official city of Padang because it is a symbol of environmental conservation. The launch of the official mascot of Padang City was marked by the release of 3,550 baby turtles/hatchlings at Air Manis Beach, Saturday (5/8/2024) afternoon. "This is a form of Padang's commitment as a pioneer in preserving life. "With the spirit of mutual cooperation and togetherness, we will make Padang City beautiful, clean and comfortable," said the Acting Mayor of Padang, Andree Algamar. Andree added that the turtle was chosen as the mascot of Padang City because turtles are tough creatures. Based on history, turtles have existed since 150 million years ago "This is in line with the reflection of Padang City, as evidenced by its 355 year old age," he explained. Uniquely, turtles that are released into the open sea will return to the beach where they were released to reproduce. "This reminds me of our brothers and sisters who migrated and returned to build their hometowns," he added. Meanwhile, Head of the Food and Fisheries Service, Alfiadi, explained the five philosophies underlying the choice of turtle as Padang's mascot.
