For centuries, the devotees of Mahalakshmi Amman Koil in Karur have been following the tradition of breaking coconuts on the head of devotees on the festive occasion of the Aadi festival. As a part of the ritual, a priest breaks hard coconuts on the heads of devotees.

The strange ritual has been around for a long time and involves the smashing of a coconut on the head of a devotee. It is believed that doing so brings good health and success. The unusual tradition has been followed for decades. Devotees offer their heads as the platform for coconut-breaking to please the presiding deities.

Over 1000 people attended this festival this year. Some of them were injured and bleeding, but none of the devotees received any serious injuries.
