SOUNDBITE (English): ALDONOV F. ALVAREZ, Ambassador of El Salvador to China
"I am really amazed (by) their achievements and these opening (up and) reform progress, and how the adjustments have been joined through all the time, all these previous years, in relation to what was necessary to adjust in terms of the needs of the market and the needs of the society. So I think that this widening of the reform has touched the whole of the areas of the country, in terms of education, in terms of trade, in terms of commerce, in terms of culture, tourism. You name it. So I'm very, very surprised that China is like a model to the world in terms of modernization, socialist modernization. And for the benefit of the most of the people, not for a few people, like some other countries in the world.
The vision of the leaders, as I mentioned before, in China, in my view, is the benefit of the people as such, not the benefit of any elite. So I am really amazed when I have traveled all across China, different cities, provinces. And I have seen first-sight by my very eyes, how the life of people has changed. There are programs, support (from) the local government, provincial government, central government, and also very high respect for minorities, and trying to help them develop, too.
People in the center, that's a real humanism. The real meaning of humanism is the people in the center of the activity, of the state, and for the society, not certain elites like in other countries. So modernization (in those countries) has been the benefit of those elites, not necessary for the benefit of most of the people. That's a difference with China. That's the meaning of socialist modernization."
