Gaza Strip: Israel says it agrees to resume ceasefire talks while killing dozens of Gazans in refugee camps and schools
Gaza Strip - August 03, 2024
Israel has said it agrees to resume talks on a Gaza ceasefire deal under the mediation of Qatar, Egypt and the United States, while dozens of Gazans were killed on Thursday by Israeli attacks on refugee camps and schools sheltering displaced people.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on early Friday that a negotiation team will be dispatched on Aug. 15 "to finalize the details for implementing the framework agreement".
The announcement was made after mediators of Qatar, Egypt and the U.S. released a joint statement, calling on Israel and Hamas to restart the talks on Aug. 15 to close all remaining gaps in the proposed deal and begin implementing it without further delay.
Meanwhile, Israeli devastating offensive in Gaza continued to cause more casualties. At least 18 Palestinians were killed and tens of others were wounded by the Israeli attacks that targeted two schools in Gaza City, Palestinian security and medical sources said Thursday.
The Palestinian Civil Defense said in a press statement that Israeli warplanes attacked the Al-Zahraa secondary school and its nearby school of Abdel Fatah Hamouda with missiles, killing and wounding tens of displaced people living inside them. There are others still trapped under the rubble who have not yet been rescued.
The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement on Thursday that the Israeli Air Force conducted an intelligence-based strike on Hamas command and control centers. "The command centers were embedded in the areas of the 'Abdelfattah Hamouda' and 'Al-Zahra' schools in Daraj Tuffah," it added.
The Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported that Israel launched deadly attacks on the Al-Bureij and the Nuseirat refugee camps in central Gaza and Khan Younis City in southern Gaza on Thursday, killing dozens of innocent civilians.
On the same day, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement that the Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 39,699.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued another evacuation order on Thursday, requiring residents in multiple places in southern Gaza, including parts of eastern and central Khan Younis, to flee to the so-called "humanitarian safe zones".
