Massive explosion on container ship sends flames skyward at Chinese port
A massive explosion occurred aboard a container ship docked at a port in eastern China.
Dramatic footage filmed in Ningbo City in Zhejiang Province on August 9, shows flames shooting into the sky as the blast from the container ship rocked the port.
The vessel, owned by Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, was operating on the Far East-Middle East CGX route.
Initial investigations suggest the explosion was triggered by a hazardous cargo container onboard, which was carrying five types of dangerous goods.
Ningbo’s Maritime Rescue Centre quickly activated an emergency response. They dispatched patrol boats to secure the area and coordinated with port firefighting teams, deploying multiple fireboats and land-based firefighting units to tackle the blaze.
By 5:00 pm, the fire was successfully extinguished, preventing further escalation.
Port officials and the Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration reported that all dock workers and crew members were safely evacuated, with no casualties.
Authorities also reassured the public that the hazardous container caused minimal environmental impact, with no significant pollution to the surrounding area or water.
An investigation team has been formed to thoroughly examine the incident and its causes.
