The Steps at Hope Gap giving access to the beach have become unusable due to erosion by the sea under cutting the cliff on which they sit. Built in 1979, they replaced an earlier set of steps eroded by the sea. 45 years on and these replacement steps have now also become precariously close to falling into the sea leaving Hope Gap beach unreachable.
A hundred metres East and the iconic old Coastguard cottages at Cuckmere Haven built in the early 1800’s sit dangerously close to the cliff edge with their sea defences crumbling as the owners’ fight for the right to renew the sea defences below them and give the cottages a reprieve of life. The sea defences here, built in 1947, have also lost their battle keeping the sea at bay and the residents of the cottages battle to raise funds as well as fight the South Downs National Park Authority’s retraction of their former approval for a new sea wall.
