STORYLINE:

A Kenyan researcher said that Chinese-manufactured anti-malarial drugs have been pivotal in taming the deadly, mosquito-borne tropical disease in his country.  
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BENARDS OGUTU, Chief research officer, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) "It has totally changed the way treatment of malaria is done because, currently, all the treatments are based on artemisinin, which are basically products that came from the Chinese research activities that have totally changed the way we treat malaria nowadays."

Artemisinin, discovered by Chinese scientists in the 1970s, has been hailed globally as a "magic drug" in malaria treatment.

"Artesunate injectables, and these also have gone through a lot of development to what we have today. And this is the first time we have a true drug that actually replaces quinine for the use in severe malaria, and I think that has been a game changer."
