Typhoon Maria made landfall near Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan Monday morning, August 12 bringing torrential rainfall.
The rain collapsed roads, flooded houses, and swelled rivers. An evacuation order was issued for Kuji City and several other municipalities.
