STORYLINE:

The Yemeni Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority, along with Yemenia Airways, on Sunday announced the reopening of an airplane maintenance center in the Houthi-held Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

The reopening of the center is expected to ease financial pressures and improve regional service capabilities for international airlines.

Last month, flights to and from Sanaa airport resumed following a United Nations-backed deal.

The airport had been largely closed to civilian traffic since 2016 due to conflicts in the country.

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating conflict since late 2014, when Houthi rebels seized control of Sanaa and large swathes of the country.

A UN-brokered truce in April 2022 led to a significant reduction in hostilities, but Yemen continues to grapple with severe economic challenges and political division.
