Toledo, United States - July 31, 2024

A heroic act unfolded near the Martin Luther King bridge in downtown Toledo as a Good Samaritan jumped into action to rescue a woman from the Maumee River. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on July 31, with newly released video capturing the dramatic moment.

Toledo Police praised Justin Slater, 38, who was fishing with friends when he heard cries for help and saw the woman struggling in the water. Despite dispatchers advising against entering the river due to safety concerns, Slater courageously plunged in and pulled her to safety on the river bank.

"This is a testament to Toledoans making a difference every day," remarked Toledo Police, highlighting Slater's selfless bravery. First responders, including Toledo Fire & Rescue Division divers, arrived promptly to assist.

The 34-year-old woman, who reportedly jumped from the MLK bridge, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Her current condition remains undisclosed.

"Some say they wouldn’t do it, but if you see somebody swimming for their life, who wouldn’t jump in and try? I think any human would," Slater humbly stated after the rescue.
