This is the bizarre moment a bachelor was married off to a crocodile demon to stave off bad luck in a village in Indonesia.

The man, Bambang, was said to have been chosen as a groom by the reptilian entity locally known as a 'jata' in the village of Batu Nwiyuh in Central Kalimantan province.

To prevent bad luck from befalling the local homes, a wedding was held between Bambang and the jata, with residents feasting on livestock slaughtered for the celebration on August 8.

Video shows Bambang, dressed in a black suit and blue-and-gold headdress, being rowed on a boat in the middle of the Kahayan River for the marriage ceremony.

Naro, chair of the Kaharingan Hindu Religious Regional Council, said: 'People who marry supernatural creatures such as jata are people chosen by the supernatural creatures themselves.

'There is no form, but the demon or spirit appears through a human intermediary that they possess - a sangiang. Then, the sangiang will say what supernatural figure is marrying the human, and the procedure for getting married.

'If someone has been chosen by a supernatural being like a jata, then they must be married off, and if they are not married off, it is feared that undesirable things could happen.'

Bambang's superstitious family claimed he was chosen by the jata seven years ago while fishing in the Kahayan River.

Bambang allegedly reeled in a large stone from his fishing line, then had a dream later that night of a mysterious shadowy figure thanking him for saving her.

Village leader Galodie said: 'According to the family, Bambang became weak and often told them of his dreams, but they did not believe him, thinking he was just hallucinating.

'The residents who participated in the wedding ritual in the river said they saw something under Bambang's boat. They said they saw the form, they said it was white.

'After the ritual was carried out, Bambang's brother said he immediately recovered.'
