Giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao arrive at San Diego Zoo
Giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao were unveiled at the San Diego Zoo in California, marking a significant milestone in the zoo's conservation efforts and cultural exchange with China.
The duo, the first pandas to arrive in the United States in over two decades, made their debut during a special ceremony at the newly inaugurated Panda Ridge habitat on August 8.
The event was attended by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng, and local civic leaders.
Festivities included traditional Chinese performances and the unveiling of an original artwork by Shepard Fairey, symbolising the enduring friendship and conservation efforts between the U.S. and China.
Paul Baribault, President and CEO of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said: 'We are thrilled to introduce Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to the world. Their presence here not only enriches our zoo but also strengthens our ongoing partnership with China in giant panda conservation.'
Yun Chuan, a five-year-old male with a distinctive long nose, and Xin Bao, a four-year-old female known for her round face and fluffy ears, arrived at the zoo in late June.
They have been settling into their new, expansive Panda Ridge habitat, which is four times larger than their previous home and inspired by the lush landscapes of their native China.
The San Diego Zoo has been a pioneer in giant panda conservation for 30 years, collaborating closely with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Their efforts have contributed significantly to the species' conservation, including advancements in neonatal care and reproductive techniques.
