STORYLINE:

This summer, Shanghai launched a series of activities to address domestic and international visitors' different demands as the city is experiencing a travel surge.

The first Shanghai international consumption season, which will last until mid-October, includes activities such as exhibitions, live performance, festivals and sport events.

It aims to build Shanghai into an international consumption center.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BRYAN ZHAO, Tourist from the United States
"Shanghai is a very beautiful city. It is really modern, really nice, (with) a lot of shopping, good food, really international presence. And it improves every few years a lot. A lot of new shops."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): EMILY ZHAO, Tourist from the United States
"We went to Nanjing Road (shopping street) earlier for shopping and we bought some clothing items. There's a lot of shopping around here. You can shop all day long."

The inbound travel surge was due in part to the increase in the number of countries enjoying China's visa-free policy.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SOHAIL HASAN, Tourist from Australia
"I'm on transit, just traveling back to Sydney, on the way back from Saudi Arab. Because of this (visa-free policy), I was able to come out of the airport and then I explored China."

China has added tourists from more countries to the visa-free entry list this year and currently implements a 72/144-hour visa-free transit policy for people from 54 countries.

According to Shanghai statistics bureau, the city recorded over 2.2 million entries by foreigners in the first half of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 191.5 percent.
