These images show how nearly 1.5 tonnes of cocaine ended up floating in the water when the traffickers' boat began to sink as the police caught up with them.

The 1.43-tonne illicit shipment worth USD 48 million of dollars was seized by the Colombian Navy in waters in the Cauca Valley region in Colombia.

The footage shows the Colombian authorities rescuing the drug traffickers as their boat sinks, leaving numerous packages containing cocaine floating on the surface.

The video then cuts to the coastguard vessel being brought ashore and unloaded of its cargo of cocaine after the authorities seized the packages floating in the sea.

The Colombian Navy said in a statement: "The Colombian Navy seized 1,434 kilogrammes of cocaine that were being transported by two Colombians and one Ecuadorian in the Valle Del Cauca. We prevented the entry of USD 48 million to drug trafficking organisations and the distribution of 3.5 million doses in the world."

A photograph shows the Colombian authorities standing in front of the impressive haul of cocaine packages.
