Outrage as tourists forced to pay ‘turnaround fee’ by aggressive restaurant owner at popular Chinese tourist spot
An outrage occurred when tourists were forced to pay a ‘turnaround fee’ by an aggressive restaurant owner at a popular tourist spot in China.
The dashcam footage was filmed in Xinxiang City in Henan Province on August 12.
A man and his friends were confronted with an unexpected demand for payment while attempting to make a U-turn in front of a restaurant at a tourist site.
The bizarre encounter involved a restaurant owner physically blocking the car and demanding 50 yuan (£5.50) to allow them to leave. The distressed tourists eventually paid 20 yuan (£2.20) to avoid further conflict.
The group had arrived in Huixian City’s Gezhenzhuang Village near the Baoquan Tourist Area around noon, looking for a place to eat. They decided to dine at the “Lyu Feng Yuan Farmhouse” but changed their minds and intended to leave after briefly stopping in front of the restaurant.
Suddenly, the restaurant owner appeared and placed himself in front of their vehicle, refusing to let them exit unless they paid a 50 yuan “turnaround fee.”
Despite the man and his friends explaining that they had no intention of dining there and merely needed to turn around, the restaurant owner remained unyielding. The situation escalated when two women joined the confrontation, insisting that payment be made. To avoid further disruption to their plans, the friends reluctantly handed over 20 yuan before being allowed to leave.
The entire ordeal was captured on the vehicle’s dashcam and quickly shared online, drawing intense criticism from netizens. Many condemned the restaurant owner’s actions as a blatant exploitation of tourists and a severe violation of their rights.
In response to the public outcry, the Xinxiang Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism, along with the People’s Government of Bawbi Town, launched an immediate investigation. It was confirmed that the Lyu Feng Yuan Farmhouse had indeed been charging such fees. Consequently, the authorities imposed a closure and rectification order on the restaurant and issued a reprimand to its owner.
The Baoquan Tourist Area issued a formal apology for the unpleasant experience and offered a 1,000 yuan (£109) “tourism consolation prize” to the affected visitors. The tourism area vowed to enhance its management and service quality to prevent such incidents and protect the rights of its visitors in the future.
