Struggling Indian farmer unearths diamond worth 80,000 USD
A struggling farmer unearthed an expensive diamond worth 80,000 USD from a mine near his home in India.
Dilip Mistry and his friends lost their jobs due to the pandemic and decided to lease a small-scale mining site in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, for the equivalent of 8.99 USD a week to make ends meet.
After years of digging, Dilip hit double jackpot finding a 16.10-carat valuable gem apart from a 14-carat diamond he unearthed before that that cost 33,355.42 USD.
Footage shows Dilip showing off the diamond he mined with his friends from the local mine. They took it to the government office, helping locals appraise the value of their diamonds.
Dilip said: ‘We were separating rocks when we saw the glimmering rock underneath. I called my friends and showed them the diamond.'
Dilip sold the 14-carat diamond and bought three acres of land where he built a home for his family.
The second diamond they found would be included in the upcoming auction organised by the local government.
A government employee at the Panna Diamond office said: 'It is a high-quality diamond and will be put in an auction after meeting all the formal requirements.'
After deducting the 12.5 per cent government royalty, the owner will receive the proceeds from the diamond's sale, which is anticipated to reach more than 80,000 USD.
Dilip said the money would be divided equally among him and his three friends.
He said: 'I will buy equipment to continue farming, aside from helping my family, but I will carry on digging the mine site to find more diamonds.'
In July, a local minimum wage worker unearthed a stunning 19.22-carat diamond in a nearby mine.
