An endangered female elephant has been put to sleep after being reunited with her daughter for the first time in 28 years.

Asian elephant Ceyla-Himali, 49, was euthanised at Zurich Zoo, Switzerland, after battling age-related health issues for some time, despite receiving dedicated veterinary care.

Female elephants live together in herds where they form strong friendships. Although her daughter was moved to another zoo, the pair were reunited last year as seen in a viral video, and formed a strong bond before Ceyla's health worsened.

The decision to euthanise her was made on 10th August, after she could no longer stand on her own.

Footage shared by the zoo captured the heartwarming moment Ceyla-Himali was reunited with her daughter Panang last year, after she was separated from her at age six and moved to Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich in 1995.

The two can be seen greeting each other with their trunks, with the images also showing parts of Panang's journey home in a large converted shipping container.
