The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to nearly 40,000, the Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Wednesday.

During the past 24 hours, the Israeli military killed 36 people and wounded 54 others, bringing the total death toll to 39,965 and injuries to 92,294 since the Palestinian-Israeli conflict broke out in early October 2023, according to the statement.

There are still many victims under the rubble and on the roads, with rescue crews unable to reach them, it added.

Meanwhile, seven people were killed on Wednesday by the Israeli bombing of a house in the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, while four people were killed after the Israeli army bombed a residential apartment in the city of Khan Younis, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Wednesday that IDF troops continued operations in southern and central Gaza. Over the past day, the Israeli Air Force struck over 40 "terror" infrastructure sites throughout the Gaza Strip.

About 625,000 children, including 300,000 UNRWA students, have lost one year of school, Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said on social media platform X on Wednesday.

"Four in five school buildings in Gaza have been directly hit or damaged. They need to be rebuilt or fixed to be used as schools," Lazzarini added.
