Bridlington, United Kingdom - August 13, 2024

On August 13t, the Bridlington RNLI responded to a distress call reporting a person in the water, only to discover it was a pink flamingo lilo blown offshore. The volunteer crew swiftly launched the inshore lifeboat 'Ernie Wellings' following the HM Coastguard's request on Tuesday afternoon. The lilo was spotted approximately 500 meters off Ulrome beach, prompting the rescue operation.

Upon arrival, the RNLI crew recovered the lilo and initiated a search, coordinated with the HM Coastguard Helicopter Rescue, to locate the reported person. However, a beachgoer soon confirmed that the lilo had been swept into the water empty, without anyone aboard.

Volunteer Helm Andy Webber commented, "Thankfully, this turned out to be a false alarm. We urge beachgoers not to bring lilos to the beach as they can easily be carried away by the wind. While colorful and fun, they are not suitable for open water."

The ILB returned to Bridlington, where it was promptly cleaned and made ready for future service.
