Kabul, Afghanistan - August 14, 2024

The Taliban celebrated the third anniversary of their reconquest of power in Afghanistan on Wednesday with a military parade at the former US base of Bagram, where the prime minister promised to "stay the course of Islamic law."

Hundreds of guests flocked to this base located about 50 kilometers from Kabul for a parade lasting more than an hour with helicopters, trucks, rocket launchers and armored vehicles of Soviet origin, but also American ones recovered by the Taliban after their lightning victory in 2021.

In a message read to the public, Afghan Prime Minister Hassan Akhund advocated maintaining the Islamist policies applied so far, highly criticized by the international community. Our leaders “must be aware that our duties did not end with jihad (holy war), we now have a responsibility to stay on course with Islamic law,” Akhund said.

On August 15, 2021, the Taliban entered Kabul unopposed, prompting the government to flee and the collapse of the US-led Western coalition that had ousted them from power 20 years earlier. The victory is commemorated a day earlier following the Afghan and Persian calendar.
