Gaza Strip - August 12, 2024

Israeli attack on a refugee camp in northern Gaza Strip on Thursday caused six people dead and many others injured, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas pledged to visit the enclave with other Palestinian leaders, braving the ceaseless conflict.

The Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported that Israel conducted an air raid on Thursday night on a residential building in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, killing six Palestinians and wounding many others. The Palestine Red Crescent Society medics have taken the victims to nearby hospitals.

On the same day, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), claimed to have fired a suicide drone at Israeli troops in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.

The Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad Movement, released a video on Thursday, showing its soldiers attacked two Israeli tanks in southern Gaza's Rafah area. The brigades also claimed to have stricken Israeli soldiers and military vehicles with mortars in Khan Younis, causing many injuries, and have used rocket missiles to hit Israeli targets in the so-called Netzarim Corridor, an east-west passage through the strip built by the Israel Defense Forces.

At the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Palestinian President Abbas addressed a special session of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on Thursday, highlighting that the Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks in Gaza have topped 40,000 since Oct 7, 2023, with two thirds of the enclave's infrastructure being destroyed, displacing millions of people.

Abbas urged the international community to be more vocal on Israeli crimes, adding that the Palestinians will rebuild Gaza with the support of other regional countries and establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Abbas said military means bring no results and peace can only be achieved through political negotiations. He has decided to visit Gaza and Jerusalem with the entire Palestinian leadership without specifying the exact time.

He also called on all world leaders and the UN secretary-general to visit the strip as well.
