Italy: Police Crack EUR 15 Million Forgery Racket Hidden On Rails Behind Basement Shelf
[Note: undated footage]
This is the moment police crack a EUR-15 million forgery racket that had been hidden behind a secret shelf on rails in an innocent-looking basement.
Astonishing raid footage released by investigators in Naples, Italy, shows how at first glance the room looked just like a normal cellar full of old junk.
But just one shove operates a secret rail system which rolls back a shelf with tins of old paint to reveal an Aladin's cave stuffed with fake banknotes and high-tech digital printers.
Inside, the footage recorded on 14th August reveals, are 31 state-of-the-art printers caught in the act of churning out EUR 2.7 million in forged notes.
Police officers can be seen showing off huge sheets of EUR 100, 50 and 20 banknotes heading for a cutting machine as they search the property.
The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office reckons the operation, run single-handedly by one suspect, had churned out EUR 5 million a year for three years.
Local media reports said that one man was arrested who is said to be responsible for setting up and managing the crooked printing shop.
But officers are understood to be investigating computers, phones and other devices seized in the raid to track down his bosses and distribution network.
The investigation continues.
