United States: Suspect Shoots Police with AK-47 in Denver Pursuit
Denver, United States - August 11, 2024
Law enforcement officers engaged in a dramatic pursuit last night after a routine vehicle stop escalated into a harrowing shootout near W. Dartmouth Ave. and S. Shoshone St. Initial reports indicate that officers attempted to halt a red Jeep Grand Cherokee for a vehicle defect when the driver evaded the stop, opening fire on pursuing officers from the passenger side window.
Within moments of activating emergency lights, over a dozen shots were discharged at officers, narrowly missing a patrol vehicle and causing extensive damage. The pursuit continued through industrial and residential areas until the suspects crashed their vehicle and fled on foot. Both the suspect's vehicle and the pursuing patrol car sustained severe damage, rendering them inoperable.
Responding agencies, including a bearcat, tactical teams, and K-9 units, mobilized swiftly to secure the area and locate the suspects. Despite extensive efforts, the suspects remained at large until a thorough investigation led to the identification and subsequent arrest of both individuals. One suspect was apprehended on August 12, 2024, with the second captured on August 13, 2024.
Recovered evidence, including an AK-47 and shell casings, underscored the severity of the incident, prompting charges of Criminal Attempt 1st Degree Murder on a Public Official. Due to their juvenile status, further details on the suspects remain confidential pending formal charges by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities expressed gratitude that no officers or bystanders were harmed during the altercation, emphasizing the inherent risks faced by law enforcement daily. The cooperation of multiple agencies, including the Sheridan Police Department, Cherry Hills Police Department, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and R.A.V.E.N., was pivotal in managing the incident.
