The U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, mediators of the Gaza ceasefire talks, have concluded their two-day discussions in Doha, with plans to reconvene in Cairo next week.
However, a Palestinian scholar raised doubts about the role Washington plays.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ABDEL MOHDY MOTAWE, Cairo-based researcher/ Executive director of Middle East Forum for Strategic Studies and National Security
"I think Egypt and Qatar enjoy integrity in their mediation, but the U.S. is an essential partner to Israel and practices an illusionist role to let this war run and continue to help Israel achieve its goals."
Since Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas and the Israeli army have been engaged in a large-scale conflict that began with a deadly Hamas attack on Israeli towns near the besieged Gaza Strip that killed about 1,200 people.
The Palestinian death toll from the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has surpassed 40,000, said the Gaza-based health authorities on Thursday.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): ABDEL MOHDY MOTAWE, Cairo-based researcher/ Executive director of Middle East Forum for Strategic Studies and National Security
"The (Israeli) goal was to break the Palestinian people to ensure no bids for resisting Israel will take place in the future. The war will cast its shadow on at least two generations. The U.S. and Israel are busy creating a status where the Palestinian people cannot fulfill their ambitions."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Cairo.
