A search and rescue operation is ongoing for a pensioner who was sucked into a hydraulic watergate in Russia.

The 71-year-old resident was swimming in the reservoir to cool off when the gates suddenly opened in Bashkortostan on August 16.

CCTV footage shows the elderly man trying to fight off strong currents. However, it was too strong and he was dragged into the funnel within minutes.

A Russian Emergencies Ministry team was deployed to find him and searches are underway.

The Ministry said in a statement: ‘The resident is currently being searched for by the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

‘Information from eyewitnesses indicates that the man was swimming near the gates of the reservoir, where prohibitory signs have been installed.'
