Footage shows a segment of a bridge under construction crumbling in India for the third time since 2022.

The collapse happened on the 205 million USD Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge, still under development in the Khagaria district of Bihar.

Officials said it is the third collapse of the cable-stayed bridge since 2022. The incident unfolded between pillars nine and ten, and no injuries were reported.

The bridge, spanning 3.1 kilometres across the Ganga, had previously experienced collapses on April 27, 2022, and June 4, 2023, with the superstructure falling into the river in both instances.

This latest collapse is the 12th bridge failure of the year and the 12th since June 18.

Concerns about the bridge's safety have been raised following these incidents, with opposition parties suggesting possible corruption.

Earlier this year, the Nitish Kumar government banned 15 engineers due to growing concerns over the increasing number of bridge failures.

The Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge is a significant project for the Nitish Kumar administration, intended to connect the northern and southern regions of the state and link the Kosi region to districts in Bihar and neighbouring Jharkhand.

Although construction began in 2014, the project is only 45 per cent complete. SP Singla Constructions Private Ltd., oversees the construction, including other Bihar projects such as a new cable bridge near Patna and works on the Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur.

The project was initially scheduled for completion by November 2019, but delays and structural issues have hindered progress.

The recent collapse highlights the ongoing challenges in completing this vital infrastructure project.
