Major tourist destination at peak time partially closed down by badly timed emergency road repair. Newquay Cornwall UK
With little warning the major route into a bustling seaside town was closed to traffic. Repairs to a subsidence during the Boardmasters Festival earlier in the month were temporarily repaired. However with little warning South West Water elected to shut down a large section of Cliff road into the town. Business in the area was effectively cut off in one of the busiest weeks of the tourist season. Both Aldi and Asda supermarkets a Wetherspoons, the town's Train station, Travelodge, Hotels and scores of businesses were either shutdown or adversely affected by customers no longer able to access their premises. Mr Mark Warren Newquay's Business Improvement District supremo only learned of the situation while walking in the town. Traffic was diverted on entering the town to back lanes with little signage observed. Vehicles were seen doing U-turns up to a mile from the town. A solitary workman with his digger was on site. After calls were made to Highways and SWW the hole is hastily refilled and re scheduled for later in the year. The turnover lost to affected Newquay businesses in this critical holiday period is estimated at tens of thousands of pounds.
