Achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is a common concern of the international community, but the U.S. government is not a qualified mediator for this issue, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani at a press conference in Tehran on Monday.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Monday held a press conference on the regional situation, especially on the issues concerning the latest conflict between Palestine and Israel, and the relations between Iran and the United States.

Regarding the Gaza ceasefire talks, Kanaani noted that the necessity of the ceasefire talks is beyond doubt, and the international community can no longer tolerate the crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.

Iran welcomes all efforts made by the international community to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, he stressed.

He also condemned the United States for supporting Israel, saying that the United States is a participant in the conflict, rather than a party that can broker a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

In response to whether Iran will respond to Israel's assassination of former Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh, Kanaani said that brokering a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Iran's response to Israel's violation of its national sovereignty are two separate issues.

He said that Israel has not yet stopped its bombing attacks on the Gaza Strip, which is a proof that Israel does not want a ceasefire.

Regarding the regional situation, Kanaani said that Israel's military operation against Palestine undermines peace and stability of the region and even the world, calling for continuous efforts from the international community to stop Israel's criminal acts.

He condemned the U.S. government for interfering in the affairs of the countries in the region and undermining stability in the region, saying that the country is not a peacemaker, but a spoiler that exacerbates tensions in the region.
