Austria: World's Oldest Zoo To Welcome First Endangered African Bush Elephant Calf In 21 Years
Vienna, Austria - August 16, 2024
The world’s oldest zoo is celebrating the upcoming birth of its first African bush elephant calf in 21 years, following the natural pregnancy of one of its female elephants.
Footage captured at Schoenbrunn Zoo, in Vienna, Austria, showed the expectant elephant mum enjoying a refreshing shower to beat the summer heat on 16th August.
Her pregnancy was revealed after vets conducted hormonal tests, confirming she was already a year along.
With elephants having a nearly two-year-long gestation period, she is expected to welcome her calf next year, said the zoo.
The zoo now hopes all four females will become pregnant in the coming years to create a balanced age structure within the matriarchal herd.
The director of the Zoo highlighted how important the new arrival will be for the protection of African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana), a species listed as 'Endangered' on IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species.
The population has reportedly declined by at least 60 per cent over the past 50 years due to escalating human-wildlife conflicts and poaching for the illegal ivory trade.
To protect the future of the African bush elephant, Schoenbrunn Zoo is has teamed up with the 'Save the Elephants' research and conservation organisation in Kenya.
