Africa's Great Migration, featuring over one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras, is currently underway across the plains of East Africa in Tanzania and Kenya, forming a stunning spectacle of wildlife.

Typically lasting from July to September each year, the Great Migration sees countless mammals travel from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. In their search for water and grass, they face challenges like crossing the dangerous Mara River and encountering brutal predators. This two-month journey not only offers a unique view of wildlife on a grand scale but also showcases the strength and resilience of life.

Among the animals making the journey is the wildebeest, also known as the gnu, a member of the antelope family characterized by a large, box-like head and curving horns. They form the largest herds within the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem of Kenya and Tanzania.

From December to May, wildebeest usually inhabit the Serengeti. As the region's dry season starts in mid to late May when the once lush grasslands and abundant water sources diminish, wildebeest migrate northwest, joining the migration trip with zebras and gazelles.

June is the peak month for wildebeest births. However, these newborns face tough survival challenges, as they must go through a perilous journey under the gaze of predators like leopards and crocodiles before reaching their final destination, Maasai Mara.

By October, when the rainy season begins in the Serengeti Plain, wildebeest start their journey back to Tanzania. This return trip takes about a month and completes their grand migration cycle.
