Italy: Helicopter Rescue Saves Hiker and Dog in Alpine Region
Alagna Valsesia, Italy - August 20, 2024
In a daring rescue operation on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Drago 165 helicopter from the Malpensa flight unit successfully extracted a hiker and his canine companion from a treacherous area near Alpe Sattal, above the town of Alagna Valsesia in the province of Vercelli, at an elevation of 2,200 meters.
The rescue was initiated in the afternoon when the hiker and his dog found themselves stranded in a particularly rugged and inaccessible part of the mountain. The area, known for its steep terrain and challenging conditions, posed a significant risk to the duo, who were unable to navigate their way back to safety.
Drago 165, equipped for such high-altitude rescues, was dispatched to the scene. The skilled pilots maneuvered the helicopter into position, allowing the rescue team to safely hoist both the hiker and his dog aboard. Despite the challenging conditions, the operation was executed with precision, ensuring the safety of all involved.
Both the hiker and his dog emerged from the ordeal unscathed. After being airlifted to a safer location, they were handed over to a ground team from the Vercelli command, who provided further assistance and ensured they returned to civilization without further incident.
This rescue highlights the critical role of aerial support in mountain rescue operations, where the terrain often makes traditional rescue methods impractical or impossible. The Drago 165 team's expertise and the coordination with ground forces exemplify the effective emergency response systems in place in Italy's alpine regions.
The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with mountain hiking, even for experienced adventurers, and underscores the importance of preparedness and the invaluable service provided by rescue teams.
