The oropouche virus, transmitted by gnats and mosquitoes, has begun to represent a significant concern in various countries in the region, especially in South America and the Caribbean. This disease, which is often confused with dengue due to the similarity of its symptoms, has led health authorities to issue alerts and recommendations for travelers and residents in affected areas.
Oropouche is a viral disease that spreads through the bites of gnats (also known as sand flies) and infected mosquitoes. Symptoms include headache, fever, muscle aches, joint stiffness, nausea, vomiting, chills, and sensitivity to light. In severe cases, oropouche can cause neuroinvasive complications, such as meningitis, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
