STORYLINE:

STANDUP (English): Ruth Baru, Xinhua reporter
"This is one of the stores located in one of Kenya's largest shopping malls in Nairobi, the capital city.
It is selling clothes from Unaku, Unaku is a Kenyan startup franchising with the Chinese clothing factory Threegun, located in Shanghai, China.
As you can see, it is high-end and attracts mostly elite customers and the middle class. We shall be finding out why Unaku has caused a stir in the market."

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BEATRICE, Customer
"I'm a frequent shopper here. I like the fabric and the quality. They have a very nice fitting."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MOSES NGATIA, Shop owner
"I started this business in 2016. I'd say China is like another home for me.
In the whole world, everyone is going to (the) Chinese. The quality is good. They design with the latest mode of fashion. Also, the cost of shipping and the cost of purchase are more reasonable."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): NI GUOHUA, Chairman of Shanghai Dragon Corporation
"We designed these clothes in China and produced them there as well. At the end of last year, we exported the first batch of 20,000 pieces to Nairobi. The price range is approximately between 300 to over 800 yuan (42 to 112 USD). Kenya, and Africa as a whole, are experiencing continuous economic growth, and I believe there is significant potential for market expansion in the future. On one hand, we will continue to strengthen relationships with local partners in Africa and on the other hand fully utilize local resources. I am confident that our cooperation will deepen over time, and we may even achieve local production of finished garments."
