A WWII Nazi bomb was detonated in Northern Ireland after nearby homes were evacuated.

The Ammunition Technical Officers (ATOs) successfully conducted a controlled explosion of the German SC500 kg historic bomb that was discovered in Rivenwood, Newtownards, on August 20.

The device, which had lain dormant for more than 83 years, was unearthed on August 15, prompting authorities to evacuate locals and implement safety measures.

The operation was part of a three-day effort to manage the risk posed by the unexploded ordnance, which, despite its age, retained the capability to cause substantial damage.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes after police confirmed the success of the operation.
