Video of the tense moment when a number of climbers ran to save themselves when Mount Dukono in Indonesia erupted.

This is how the video shows a number of climbers rushing to save themselves from the peak of Mount Dukono, in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku province, Indonesia, when it erupted spewing volcanic ash, on Saturday 17 August 2024.

"The volcanic authorities identified the presence of climbers without permits in a dangerous area in the Mount Dukono area on Saturday 17 August 2024," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in his statement, on Tuesday 20 August 2024.

Abdul Muhari said the authorities did not provide recommendations for activities including climbers approaching the crater within a 3 kilometer radius from the peak. However, there are a number of climbers who violate these safety recommendations.

"At that time, Mount Dukono, which is in North Halmahera Regency, was climbed by dozens of unlicensed climbers when volcanic ash erupted. The Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA) said they were lucky to be able to save themselves from the ash from the eruption at that time," he explained.

It is known that even though an eruption has been monitored, the volcanic activity status of Mount Dukono is still at level II or 'Alert'.
