Thousands of student demonstrations in South Sulawesi Indonesia ended in riots, the crowd burned cars and damaged public facilities.


A demonstration by thousands of students in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, regarding the rejection of the Jokowi presidential dynasty ended in chaos, on Monday 26 August 2024 evening. around 20.00 Central Indonesian time (local time).

It appears that the chaos started when several students again closed a section of Jalan Urip Sumiharjo, Panakkukang District, Makassar City.

They blocked the road with several sticks of wood and burned used tires.

Students also fought back by throwing stones at the authorities.

The police responded to the students' throwing stones with tear gas.

Students also scattered and ran into the campus area. As a result of the chaos, a public transport car was damaged and burned by the crowd.

Seeing this, the police immediately deployed a crowd dispersing vehicle and water cannon belonging to the South Sulawesi Regional Police Mobile Brigade Unit.

Two people suspected of provocateurs of the riots were arrested. Until now, clashes between students and police are still ongoing.

Students also continue to stay on campus.

It is known that thousands of students from various campuses in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, took to the streets to demonstrate against the politics of President Jokowi's dynasty and the revision of the 2024 Regional Head Election Law.
