Wichita, United States - August 25, 2024

The much-anticipated Frontiers in Flight Air Show at McConnell Air Force Base was abruptly canceled on August 25, 2024, following a severe weather event that swept through the area. A slow-moving wet microburst, characterized by its sudden, intense downdrafts and heavy rain, brought wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, leading to significant damage across the airfield.

The decision to cancel the air show, which was scheduled to feature headline performances including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, was made in the interest of public safety. The weather phenomenon not only posed immediate risks to attendees but also left the base's infrastructure unprepared for the continuation of the event.

According to reports from the base, the microburst caused considerable structural damage, including the uprooting of tents, the collapse of temporary structures, and the scattering of debris across the show grounds. While the air show had already drawn thousands on Saturday, the severe weather struck early Sunday morning before the public had entered the event area for the day.
