Lebanon: Lebanon's Hezbollah launches large-scale attack on Israel
Beirut, Lebanon - Recent
Lebanon's Hezbollah on Sunday launched a large-scale attack on Israel in retaliation for the assassination of its senior military commander Fouad Shokor, while Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on the same day declared a 48-hour nationwide state of emergency.
The Hezbollah issued three statements on Sunday. In the first statement, it announced that a large-scale drone attack was launched on Israel in retaliation for the killing of Shokor in Beirut, triggering air raid sirens in northern Israel.
The Hezbollah said in the second statement that it had completed the first phase of its retaliatory strikes on Israel, with more than 320 rockets fired at 11 military bases and barracks, including the Meron base and four sites in the occupied Golan Heights.
The Hezbollah said in the third statement that all the attacks launched on that day crossed the temporary border between Lebanon and Israel at the designated time and hit the predetermined targets in multiple directions, so the military operation on the day had been completed.
The statement said that Israel's claim that it had taken "preemptive action" and disrupted Hezbollah's armed strike was "groundless and inconsistent with the facts." The statement also said that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah will make a speech later on the day to further refute Israel's claims.
Air defense sirens were sounded on Sunday in the northern Israeli cities of Kiryat Shmona and Acre. The Israeli Home Front Command issued a civilian defense guide for Tel Aviv and the northern region. The Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv had diverted incoming flights and delayed takeoffs.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel had destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rockets that day. Netanyahu said that, on Sunday morning, Israel discovered Hezbollah preparing to launch an attack. Following consultations with the military, the decision was made to take proactive measures to eliminate the threat..
According to the Israeli army, they dispatched about 100 fighter jets on Sunday to target thousands of rocket launchers and more than 40 rocket launching sites located by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
