Newtownards, United Kingdom - August 23, 2024

In a tense operation that unfolded over several days, Ammunition Technical Officers (ATOs) successfully conducted a controlled explosion of a World War II bomb discovered in the Rivenwood area of Newtownards, Northern Ireland. The bomb, identified as a German SC500 kg, was unearthed on Thursday, 15th August, prompting a significant evacuation and safety measures.

The device, which had lain dormant for approximately 83 years, was still deemed highly dangerous due to its explosive potential. This discovery led to a complex operation involving the evacuation of residents from the vicinity, ensuring their safety while the bomb was made secure.

The controlled explosion took place On August 20th at around 3:38 PM, following meticulous planning and preparation by the ATOs. The operation was part of a three-day effort to manage the risk posed by the unexploded ordnance, which, despite its age, retained the capability to cause substantial damage.

Police confirmed just after 6 PM last night that it was safe for residents to return to their homes, signaling the end of a nerve-wracking period for the community. The successful detonation was a relief to local authorities and residents alike, who had been kept at a safe distance during the operation.
