Toronto, Canada - August 22, 2024

Canada's two major railways, Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), have ceased operations starting from Thursday due to a prolonged breakdown in labor negotiations.

Shortly after the labor negotiations fell apart, the over 9,000 railway workers represented by the Teamsters Canada labor union initiated a strike, according to local media reports.

The labor negotiations between the Teamsters Canada union and the two railway companies collapsed late on Wednesday. The strike commenced early on Thursday, marking the first simultaneous shutdown of operations by both railway companies.

Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon on Thursday announced that the federal government has instructed the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to impose a final binding arbitration to settle down the current labor disputes. Additionally, the government will request the CIRB to issue a directive for the resumption of operations within a few days.
